Rallying for Phil: Community, Courage and the Fight Against MND

Phil Dobbing (L) and Shaun Gallagher

Like many people diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease, former policeman and rugby player Phil Dobbing was taken aback when he received the life-altering news last year.

MND, a progressive condition that affects the brain and nerves, often arrives without warning, forcing individuals and their families to confront profound uncertainty. In recent years, the disease has gained greater public visibility—thanks to the tireless efforts of figures such as the late Doddie Weir, through the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, and rugby league legend Rob Burrow, whose fundraising and advocacy inspired nationwide support.

On the Wirral, the MND Association group has been at the forefront of providing care, raising awareness, and supporting research into a cure. Their work has been given fresh momentum by Phil Dobbing’s remarkable response to his diagnosis, not with retreat, but with determination to make a difference for others. In a heartfelt statement on Facebook, Phil said, “Since becoming a reluctant member of this group, I have been overwhelmed and humbled by the support they have offered. While the national organisation focuses on funding research and lobbying government, the Wirral group is there on the ground—supporting not only the 30-plus individuals living with MND, but their families too.”

Debbie Williams, Wirral MNDA chairperson, emphasised the profound shift that comes with such a diagnosis. “A diagnosis of MND brings home the preciousness of every day.” She praised Phil’s extraordinary contribution in the face of such adversity and said his efforts together with his friends and family have been “phenomenal.” She explained, “Our main goal is to bring understanding and advice. We deliver practical and financial support, raise money and awareness, as well as helping sufferers like Phil do the things that are important.”

Over recent weeks, Phil has helped to galvanise a wide-ranging fundraising campaign that has not only raised awareness but delivered tangible support for those living with MND. A charity rugby match at Birkenhead Park FC Rugby Club brought together players and supporters in a show of solidarity. This was preceded by an ambitious 24-hour ERG challenge at EmpoweredFit Gym, co-ordinated by his close friend and former colleague Shaun Gallagher alongside an auction and raffle. All combining to raise an impressive total of £13,200.

As well as Shaun, high profile figures who rallied to the cause included England international and former British and Irish Lion Wade Dooley who donated two of his prized international blazers. Shaun said, “Phil initially did not want the fuss nor was he interested in any financial help from the campaign. However, he did want Wirral MND to benefit from the various efforts. The least I could do was to call on some of my contacts to support Phil’s wishes. “Twenty-four hours is nothing compared to Phil’s day to day right now,” he said.

The story of Phil Dobbing and Wirral MNDA is one of resilience, solidarity, and quiet determination. In the face of a devastating diagnosis, Phil has channelled his energy into helping others, supported by a network of friends, fellow players, and local volunteers.

Together, they have created not just a successful fundraising campaign, but a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when communities come together. Anyone interested in helping can contact Debbie Williams via debbie.williams@mndassociation.org
